Troy

You may not know his name, but undoubtedly you've heard of his films. Like John Woo, Wolfgang Petersen started his filmmaking career in his native country and then found further success making American movies.

The German filmmaker directed the submarine classic Das Boot and a string of other hit action thrillers, including In The Line Of Fire, Outbreak, and Air Force One, two of which I've featured in Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK.

Greek mythology has some of the most imaginative and compelling stories ever told. Loosely based on "The Iliad" by Homer, Troy is about the Trojan War and is perhaps Wolfgang Petersen's most ambitious project he's ever done.

The film makes references to expressions that have become so familiar in the modern English language, like "the face that launched a thousand ships," Trojan Horse, and Achilles heel.

Troy's excellent cast includes Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom, but I think Eric Bana, Rose Byrne, Peter O'Toole, and Diane Kruger carried the movie with their performances.

Troy is magnificent with spectacular fight action scenes and a solid script, and it's one of the most underrated epic war films. Wolfgang Petersen has made several great films, and Troy is one of his best works.

Sadly, Wolfgang Petersen recently lost his fight against pancreatic cancer, and it's criminal his passing hardly made the news and social media. So please check out his filmography. There's something for everyone, and Troy is a must-see or a "re-see" for that matter.

Rest in peace, Wolfgang Petersen.
