Occupation: Rainfall

Australia has put out some notable science fiction films, and I've showcased a couple in MOVIE OF THE WEEK, Predestination and The Osiris ChildThis week I'm featuring another gem from Down Under, Occupation: Rainfall, and to this day, I'm puzzled as to why this movie, with all its high production value and spectacular visual effects, didn't get released internationally in theaters.

While its Australian cast may not be well known to most U.S. audiences, Occupation: Rainfall has one of my favorite comedians, Ken Jeong, and everyone will recognize Temuera Morrison from the Star Wars universe. (Coincidentally, Temuera Morrison is also in The Osiris Child.)

Released in 2020, Occupation: Rainfall is technically a sequel, but writer and director Luke Sparke made it so you don't need to see the first film, OccupationIt's almost as if he wanted to start the film series from the beginning again. Additionally, a different actress took over the lead female role of Amelia.

The alien invasion genre has become crowded in recent years, but Occupation: Rainfall has become one of my favorites with its writing, directing, characters, and action à la Independence Day, Top Gun, and Star Wars. In fact, Occupation: Rainfall might be replacing Battle: Los Angeles as my top favorite alien invasion movie of all time.

I'm looking forward to the next Occupation film, although I wonder how Luke Sparke is going to top Occupation: Rainfall.
