Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome is one of the greatest sci-fi action movies nobody's heard of--except maybe for BSG fans.

I've showcased direct-to-video movies on Ted's MOVIE OF THE WEEK (Fire With Fire, Outpost: Black Sun), but this is the first time I've featured a TV movie in the blog. It goes to show that just because a movie wasn't released in theaters, it doesn't mean the quality of the film is any less. Before Jaws, one of Steven Spielberg's earliest works was a made-for-television film called Duel.

First aired in 2012, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome is a prequel about William Adama when he was a young pilot during the First Cylon War, long before he became Commander of Battlestar Galactica.

You don't have to have watched the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica series to understand and appreciate Blood & Chrome. However, there is a term that comes up frequently, DRADIS, an acronym for Direction, RAnge, and DIStance. It's a navigation and tracking system used in BSG spaceships.

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome may be a television movie, but the quality of the writing, directing, and cast are so good NBCUniversal should have released it in the theaters. From a story standpoint, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome is on par with some of the best Star Wars and Star Trek films. So say we all.
