Thor

This holiday, I started watching the Marvel Cinematic Universe films in chronological order. Because not all MCU movies were released theatrically in order--specifically Captain America: The First Avenger and Captain Marvel--watching them successively and in order gives me a much greater appreciation for the storyline about the Tesseract and the story arcs of the individual characters.

I have featured Captain America: The Winter Soldier in the blog and still revere it as one of the best movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with some of the most amazing action fight choreography ever, but Thor is another excellent standout in the film series.

When I first saw Thor in 2011, I was impressed by the film's overall quality because it went beyond being a superhero action movie. With very emotional scenes and memorable performances by its superb cast members, Thor is also a powerful drama and partly a comedy, a rather unusual combination. I was just as surprised to learn Kenneth Branagh (Death on the Nile, Murder on the Orient ExpressJack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) directed the film.

MCU films have had many A-list and award-winning actors, but Thor's extensive first-rate cast comprises Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan SkarsgΓ₯rd, Rene Russo, Idris Elba, and of course, Chris Hemsworth in the title role.

Marvel Entertainment broke new ground with superhero films, and while Disney now owns the company, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios ought to be commended for contributing to MCU's success as they collaborated on the first few films. Under Kevin Feige's leadership, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the greatest and most successful film series ever.

That said, like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor has earned my prestigious 5-star rating because it's not just an awesome superhero action movie; it is an exceptional film all around.
