Freejack

I learned a long time ago not to always trust other people's opinions about movies, especially movie critics. As I like to point out, there are disparities between the critics' Tomatometer and Audience Scores all the time on Rotten Tomatoes. Sometimes, movies that get high ratings are overrated, and movies that people say "sucks" or "is garbage" are actually not bad. And it's not unusual for a film to require another or multiple viewings to understand and appreciate; consider mind-bending films like Inception and Tenet.

When it came out in 1992, I got the impression that Freejack was not very good based on people's comments. But when I finally saw the movie, it turned out not as bad as people made it out to be. In fact, I felt quite the opposite, and it's still one of my favorite sci-fi action films.

Emilio Estevez leads the cast with Reno Russo, Anthony Hopkins, and David Johansen, aka Buster Poindexter (remember the song "Hot Hot Hot"?), but my favorite cast member is the scene-stealing Mick Jagger. His character is one of my favorite movie villains, and I wonder why the Rolling Stones' front man didn't make more movies.

Freejack starts off a lot like the cult classic Escape From New York, and to this day, I don't understand why Freejack performed poorly with audiences, let alone movie critics. Freejack is not just an underrated sci-fi action film based on a novel. It's a shame the movie has been forgotten over the years. Freejack certainly deserves another viewing.
