Side By Side

George Lucas caused quite a stir in Hollywood when he shot Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones on digital video-based tape instead of film. Lucasfilm, Sony, and Panavision developed one of the very first digital cinema camera systems that would disrupt the entire movie industry. Not surprisingly, George Lucas received a lot of backlash for pioneering digital filmmaking.

The "look of film" has been widely debated for some time. With Keanu Reeves as the host and narrator, Side By Side is a fascinating look at the movie industry transitioning from traditional celluloid to digital film.

The 2012 documentary has interviews with Hollywood heavyweights, including George Lucas, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, the Wachowskis, and Martin Scorsese.

But interestingly, the documentary makes no mention of IMAX, the premium large film format that has gained so much popularity and presence in recent years.

In addition to presenting different perspectives on the subject of film and its future, Side By Side is very educational and informative. If you're a movie buff or curious about filmmaking technology, Side By Side should be on your watch list.
