The Island

Michael Bay is known for mega-budget action movies, like the Transformers films, The Rock, and Armageddon, but one movie from the filmmaker that seems to have been forgotten over the years is The Island with Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson.

The Island explores the science fiction trope about questioning your existence and the world you live in, like in Equilibrium, THX 1138, Cloud Atlas, and The Matrix.

While The Island has Michael Bay's signature over-the-top action sequences, the movie is a serious science fiction thriller, although not as serious as his Pearl Harbor and 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.

Like Blade Runner, The Island takes place in the year 2019, but as usual, predictions, as portrayed in futuristic movies, don't come to pass in our lifetime, e.g., flying cars.

Movie critics haven't usually been too kind to Michael Bay, yet he's still one of the most successful filmmakers in Hollywood. He has a unique directing and visual style, but with all the cool VFX, explosions, flipping car crashes, etc., there is an underlying subject of humanity that is often frequented in his movies. Released in 2005, The Island didn't do great with critics and audiences, but I think it's an underrated film from Michael Bay. I hope it becomes another movie that people "rediscover" and has better success on streaming services.
