Extraction

Usually, I'm spot on with my movie ratings and stand by them, but on very rare occasions, I have upgraded a rating. Such was the case with Black Widow, which I discussed several months ago in the blog.

More recently, I rewatched Extraction with Chris Hemsworth before seeing its sequel on Netflix, and I was quite confounded as to why I initially gave the first film only a 4-star rating, which generally means I consider it to have a good overall entertainment value but would not care to see the movie again. In Black Widow, I can kind of see how I originally gave the film 4 stars.

But Extraction has such a good story, character depth, and outstanding cast, and it's refreshingly different for the action genre. Extraction revolves around the son of a drug lord, and how many movies have you seen that involve the criminal world in India? There's also a continuous theme about fathers and sons throughout the film, which was brilliantly written. I actually feel bad for giving Extraction only 4 stars because it's such a good film. It's definitely a 4.5 (i.e., highly recommended, I would want to add it to my movie collection).

Extraction is based on a graphic novel, produced by the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Endgame), and written by the younger Joe Russo.

Like the John Wick films, the Extraction films were directed by a stunt coordinator turned director. Sam Hargrave worked on the action fight sequences in Atomic Blonde with Charlize Theron and has directed the two Extraction films so far. (Chad Stahelski was a stuntman and directed all the John Wick movies.)

These filmmakers have been pushing the envelope in the action genre with these single-shot "Oners" and close-quarters, handheld camera work for fight scenes, and I can't wait to see what else they come up with. Until then, Extraction and Extraction 2 are absolute must-sees.
