The Chronicles of Riddick

Dune: Part 2 is coming out later this year, but there's a very Dune-istic film every science fiction action fan should see.

The Chronicles of Riddick is an unusual sequel because, while it's a follow-up to Pitch Black from 2000 with the return of certain characters, it's in an entirely different sub-genre. Pitch Black was a monster film in the style of Aliens, whereas The Chronicles of Riddick is a space opera, like Dune and Flash Gordon. So much so you could probably still understand Chronicles without seeing the first film, but you want to watch Pitch Black to best appreciate the characters and storyline.

Reprising his role as the antihero Riddick, Vin Diesel leads an excellent cast with Judi Dench, Karl Urban (Star Trek, Dredd), Colm Feore (The Insider), Keith David, Thandiwe Newton, and Alexa Davalos (The Man in the High Castle).

The Chronicles of Riddick is characterized by the lack of high technology often associated with science fiction films, thus, giving it a more Dune-inspired look.

The Chronicles of Riddick is a film that may not have been well-received when it first came out in 2004 and probably won't surpass Dune's success, but I still consider it one of the most underrated epic sci-fi films ever.
