The Prestige

The Prestige is an underrated Christopher Nolan film. Based on the novel by Christopher Priest, The Prestige is about two rival magicians in the 1890s and their obsessions to outdo each other. It doesn't have epic action or big special effects that have become the hallmarks of Nolan's movies.

Instead, The Prestige is a dialogue-heavy drama, like Memento, and the film frequently switches between flashbacks and "present time" without clear distinctions from editing, potentially confusing audiences trying to follow the plot. But the reward is in the ending.

The Prestige has a dynamite cast--Michael Caine, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Andy Serkis--but the scene stealer is David Bowie as Nikola Tesla in the fictional story. There's even a cameo by master magician Ricky Jay.

In traditional Nolan style, The Prestige can be narratively overwhelming and mind-bending and may require another viewing or more to appreciate the film fully. Or if you don't have the time, you can search on YouTube "The Prestige ending explained."

But after seeing the end of The Prestige, you may want to see it again with a fresh perspective after learning the "prestige" of the film.
