Godzilla (1998)

Godzilla is such an iconic character that there have been countless remakes and sequels about him from film production companies on both sides of the Pacific Ocean. Yet, I'm one of the very few who liked the 1998 Godzilla from the filmmaker who brought us Stargate, Independence Day, and The Day After Tomorrow, Roland Emmerich.

I'm not sure why audiences panned this film version of the creature. Yes, certain dialogue could have used some reworking, and it has some lame stereotypes and tropes. But it's faster-paced and action-packed with a solid story, and many of the special and visual effects still hold up today. There's Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno, but interesting subplots about the breeding and the French government's involvement help set it apart from other Godzilla films.

On Threads, people were talking about and praising Godzilla Minus One, which, after seeing it, prompted me to watch this old Godzilla movie again. I've also seen Godzilla from 2014, which was directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, The Creator), along with all the MonsterVerse films so far, but above all, the 1998 Godzilla is still my favorite, even though it may be far from perfect.
