The Mummy (2017)

I like Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, but I can't say I've been a huge fan of Stephen Sommers' The Mummy films, even though they were hugely successful.

Years later, Universal Pictures was going to reboot their series of films about monsters à la Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe about comic superheroes. The first film in Universal Pictures' Dark Universe was technically Dracula Untold, which I featured in MOVIE OF THE WEEK.

The next installment in the series was The Mummy with Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, along with Sofia Boutella (Rebel Moon, Star Trek Beyond, Kingsman: The Secret Service). Despite having two major A-listers starring in the film, The Mummy from 2017 didn't fare too well critically and financially. Nonetheless, I think it's another one of Tom Cruise's underrated films.

Unfortunately, Universal Pictures decided to scrap the entire plan for Dark Universe, but I wish the studio will reconsider reviving Dark Universe because the franchise still has much potential.
