Mulan (1998)

With today's technologies, it seems any animated film or TV show can be adapted into a live-action movie, but I admit I was kind of disappointed with Mulan from 2020. As I recall, I would have preferred faster pacing, and there were a few departures from the 1998 animated classic.

For the original Disney film, Mulan was voiced by Ming-Na Wen, who, interestingly enough, came back to Disney to play Fennec Shand in The Mandalorian and The Book Of Boba Fett.

But the scene stealer in Mulan is the guardian little dragon, voiced by Eddie Murphy. Mushu is one of the funniest Disney characters since Robin Williams' Genie in Aladdin, and Eddie's performance is so underappreciated.

The story of Mulan is based on an actual Chinese legend, and while Mulan may not be a real person, it is an incredibly fascinating and inspirational story about gender, regardless of ethnicity.

There's another live-action Asian film Mulan from 2009 that I've been wanting to see, but it's currently not available on any major streaming service. Until then, the 1998 animated musical Mulan is the one I highly recommend. Of course, it's for kids, but it's still highly entertaining and fun for the whole family.
