War Games

I don't know how many times I've watched 9 To 5 on HBO, but if you were an '80s kid, Dabney Coleman was a familiar face in Hollywood films and television.

John Badham may not be a well-renowned filmmaker like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas from the era, but he's directed classics like Saturday Night Fever, Blue Thunder, and War Games with Dabney Coleman, playing opposite a very young Matthew Broderick.

Before Skynet, there was WOPR (War Operation Plan Response) in War Games, a military strategic supercomputer with the ability to learn. Because of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, the threat of nuclear war was a common subject in movies from the 1980s, like War Games. Even The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are, in a sense, anti-nuclear war films.

While we don't use acoustic couplers for phone handsets to connect to the Internet now, I still think War Games holds up well today, and it features Dabney Coleman. He may have disappeared from Hollywood for a while, but his contributions to the film industry, both as a versatile actor and a part of iconic films, remain timeless. Dabney Coleman was one of the greatest of all time and will be missed. Rest in peace, Dabney Coleman.
