Returner

From the Japanese filmmaker behind the highly acclaimed Godzilla Minus One, Returner is one of the earliest films written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki.

Incidentally, Returner is another movie I discovered at Best Buy many years ago. Like with Brotherhood of the Wolf, I was just strolling through the store, minding my business, when the DVD case cover of Returner caught my attention.


I rented the movie on Netflix, back when they were renting discs through the mail, and I liked the film so much I bought a copy, which I still have to this day.

Somehow, Returner blends science fiction with aliens, time travel, the Chinese Triad and Japanese Yakuza, but trust me on this.

Heavily influenced by The Matrix and The Terminator, Returner is not exactly original, but it's exceptionally well done and is an absolute gem with a brilliant ending.
