Dead Bang

The summer before my senior year in high school, I worked at a local video rental store in New Orleans. The place was across the street from my house, and one day, my boss, the owner, recommended this movie to me with Don Johnson.

What I remembered most about Dead Bang was that it was about white supremacists. Back in the 1980s, you didn't hear that much about them like you do now, so, in a way, the film was ahead of its time. Directed by John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate, Ronin), Dead Bang is an crime action thriller, and Don Johnson is a detective from L.A. What started as seemingly random murders in a small town leads to a substantial criminal enterprise.

Don Johnson is a fantastic actor, who should have done more major movies. Dead Bang didn't fare well at the box office in 1989, but it's an excellent, must-see film to help raise awareness about far-right extremists, especially in today's political climate.

Hollywood has always needed some social group to portray as bad guys. Unfortunately, some of them have been racial stereotypes. If anybody deserves to be portrayed as a villain, it is white supremacists because they're truly evil and a cancer to humankind.
