Heist (2001)

Not to be confused with Heist from 2015 with Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Robert De Niro, Heist from 2001 is an entirely different film with Gene Hackman and Danny DeVito.

Gene Hackman plays Joe Moore, the leader of a team of thieves and con artists, and with its clever dialogue using crime slang, Heist is a refreshing take on the heist movie genre. Gene Hackman is always outstanding, but another standout in the film was Danny DeVito playing the villain.

In last night's Academy Awards, I appreciated the special tribute to Gene Hackman, who left a legacy of exceptional performances. Many have cited some of his notable films, like The French Connection, Unforgiven, Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, and Crimson Tide, but my favorite role for Gene Hackman has to be Lex Luthor in the Superman films with Christopher Reeve.

Heist is a little-known film with Gene Hackman and is an extremely underrated. With a career spanning decades, Hackman appeared in over 75 films, so there are numerous movies to watch and rewatch the Hollywood legend, but Heist should definitely be on the watchlist.

Rest in peace, Gene Hackman.
